Futuristic lab scene with lasers and robotics dramatic lighting, Motorized Precision.

DECIMA x OFFF2022

It Has Been a Long, Strange Trip

Director Gmunk collaborated with VTPro and Motorized Precision to deliver a large-scale cinematic sequence powered by motion control robotics and laser synchronization. Using the KIRA motion controlled robot on a 30-foot modular track track system. The result was an immersive shot that blended moco robotics, light design, and storytelling into one fluid performance.

The solution

Motorized Precision deployed the KIRA moco robot on a custom 30-foot track, using MP Studio’s intuitive motion control software system to achieve frame-accurate synchronization with VTPro’s lighting rig. Every sweep, beam, and reflection was choreographed to match the robot’s movement exactly. The system ensured that each take could be repeated identically, providing the consistency needed for complex post-production compositing while preserving the integrity of the performance.

"DECIMA is a short film exploring themes of transmigration, empowerment, soul passage, and illumination. Produced for the legendary design conference OFFF Barcelona, which granted GMUNK the opportunity to craft their 20th Anniversary Title sequence with the highest honor.”

“Once you start creating the world, there are so many interesting vignettes you can take the characters on. The best part of being a filmmaker is dreaming up all the history and new scenarios.”

The Impact

The GMUNK Project highlighted Motorized Precision’s ability to blend cutting-edge robotics with intricate lighting automation, producing a shot that was both breathtaking and technically uncompromising. This project set a standard for how motion control and lighting synchronization can combine to deliver moments of cinematic precision in high-end commercials and film productions.
